It says AC but worked on my DC landscape lighting wires.
The instructions say it doesn't work with DC, AC only, but it worked on my low-voltage landscaping lighting wires and helped me find the break in the wire fairly easily. Better than digging up the whole wire. Your results may vary.I tested it on AC wires and it works well and you can tell the hot from the neutral by how easily it detects the voltage. If it's hard to detect, that's the neutral.

Great tool for electical circuit mapping and safety purposes!
This is a great tool for mapping out circuit breakers in the home of business. It's also great to make sure the right breaker is tripped before performing electrical work, (replacing switches, outlets, etc.). Just get close, and it lights up and beeps if there is power present at the device. This is a great time saver and safety tool to keep you from accidentally working on a live circuit when you could swear you tripped the right breaker, (unrelated to the swearing when you find the circuit is still live the hard way). If you do any kind of electrical work as a homeowner, this tool is a must have!

I suppose that it DOES work well. That is, if you can tolerate the horrible beeping that it makes...
The digital readout is the main reason that I chose this no contact voltage tester. But even though it tis the only one that I have seen that has a digital readout, I'm afraid that I can't recommend it... The beeping that it makes is kind of ear splitting, and I can find no way to turn it off or to turn it down. I have another one of these by Klein Tools that doesn't have a digital readout, but the beeping on it is much more subdued. And so, as much as I wanted one of these with a digital readout, the beeping that this one makes is so bad that I won't even use it at all...

Electric tester. Dislikes rechargeables.
Tests well. Backlit. Not very easy to read as an older person. It beeps and flashed so that helps. Tested several times to be sure it functioned properly before putting my life on the line. This thing will not work with any of my rechargeable batteries though. I tried at least 20. 3-4 different brands. Nada. Would not turn on. Ran fine on cheap alkalines.
