high-end gaming is going beyond quad-cores...
For a long time I had reservations about upgrading from my i5-4690k since most games wouldn't take advantage of the i7-4790k's hyperthreading, and upgrading to 6th or 7th gen i5's would include the cost of a new motherboard and DDR4 ram for barely any performance difference. This was a sentiment of many Haswell-quad core owners. However, things change when it comes to the 8th-gen i5's. These things have 6 threads and 6 cores. So the i5-8600k I purchased is technically more practical than any previous i7 since the hyperthreading doesn't compare to having a real core.Even then my only expectation was that it would prevent any CPU bottleneck for when I upgrade my graphics card beyond the GTX 1070 I owned now. I ran some benchmarks of the Batman Arkham games and the average fps for each at 1440p at max detail ( minus the interactive fog and debris for Arkham Knight) and this CPU raised the minimum framerates across the board. It turned out I was already bottlenecked and the 8600k alleviated it.I should clarify that I was already able to achieve 70+ fps in these games before, but the streaming issues with the UE3 engine would cause many drops below 60 and occasionally in the 40's when gliding in the games at max detail especially Arkham Knight), which was disparaging for a GTX 1070. Even overclocking didn't work, and now I know it was due to the 4690k. Before, Arkham Knight used to dip into 50's and 40's when gliding over certain parts of the city and while driving. I just went over those areas again and those dips are gone ( I guess since the game was mostly optimized for the PS4, it preferred having more cores). I was actually struggling to find ways to lower the FPS outside of enabling more of the gameworks features. Certain stress points in the older games have also had less dips.Lesson learned, even though a lot of sources may say the previous Intel quad-cores may be enough to give you a good amount of frames, the extra cores from the eighth gen can certainly raise the minimums.

Plenty good for me
Built new system and cpu was part of the upgrade. Replaced a I7 3770k with this I5 8600k. A couple of generations newer with newer tech. Could have got an I7 for almost a hundred bucks more but decided this time an I5 should be fine for me. Turns out it was. For me and what I do, an I7 is kind of overkill. Nice to have the top dog but not really practical if you actually don't need it, and this dog still hunts plenty good. Paired this with a GTX 1070 my gaming experience puts a smile on my face. I am not overclocking anything as I've not had a need to do so. The performance is so good I doubt if I'm going to be noticing any difference overclocking other than getting higher numbers running benchmarks but that's not my thing. Overclocking is going to get me more heat and more power consumption but probably nothing I can 'feel' so I'm going to leave it as it is unless later I have a need to do so.

Excellent Processor
Got this for a friend that needed it badly. Was making a video with Premiere Pro and he was just using integrated graphics on an i5-4600. This changed his view on how fun it can be to have a nice computer. Got this paired with a GT 1030 and 16GB of RAM. I have never seen such a big smile come across a skeptical computer user's face before. I have a Noctua cooler sitting on top of this. I know it can be overclocked and got it just for those reasons in the future. I would have picked up the non-K version, but was thinking a few years down the road to boost the speed if somehow this speeds down this the big updates that come every few months from MS. This thing just hums along doing what it needs to do. A bit overkill for a basic computer, but a huge improvement in Premiere Pro.

Great 6 core Coffee Lake i5 CPU!! Loving it so far....
Excellent i5 Coffee Lake CPU & overclocks well out of the box on a Aorus Z370 Gaming 5 mobo. Under water cooling, it runs cooler than my 7700K and at 4.7Ghz, it only saw 50C only on an EK monoblock running Intel stress test & benchmarks. Be advised that availability has been thin and has pushed the price above MSRP at times (won't use that issue in the rating of the actual product) so if you do purchase one, it may take time for it to ship. Outside of that, its runs perfectly fine for everything that doesn't really need Hyperthreading which i7 CPUs have. Unless your strapping this to a serious highend GPU, you won't miss the Hyperthreading of the i7. And since this is priced for more saving with performance, its the better choice. If you're into gaming/overclocking for general apps & programs mainly, this will fit the bill instead of an i7 8700K, so save the extra money for a good mobo and DDR4 memory instead.

Extremely Powerful and Efficient!
I bought this baby for $230. For that amount of money I got a processor that not only rips though any game I play, but also just destroys at being an incredible desktop and productivity machine. Sure its not as good at that as say, a Ryzen system, but I use my PC for gaming 90% of the time, so for people like me, this thing is beyond perfect. I have it on a permanent 4.8 GHz turbo/overclock (All 6 cores) and I only run 1.235v though this thing (Stable on Cinebench for multiple passes and aida64 for 30+ minutes). In the end it runs temps about 63c on a full load (Aida64 etc) and pulls about 83 watts max. Stock was around 90-95 watts @ 4.3 GHz. It runs so cool, I don't even need to delid. Mind you this is all silicone lottery stuff, but damn am I happy for $230.

good little chip
I got this one for doing some overclocking on. is it the best chip in 2019? nah. is it the fastest? not necessarily. can it overclock? heck yes! I may have gotten a golden chip, as i was able to push it to 5.55ghz on chilled water cooling. max temps were 10 C under load. i used it in conjunction with a 2080 Ti to get near the top of the unigine superposition leaderboard. very happy with how it worked out. I did end up shoving 1.52v through it just to keep it stable at those speeds, but it was worth it. great chip to play with for enthusiast overclockers on a budget.
