Good video support, lackluster features/UI/performance, poor network handling
This player is very similar to the KDLinks HD700 player, but seems to be slightly better, and has a much longer warranty (though not necessarily better, but I can’t comment on either).Pros:- Seems to be very well-constructed and looks nice.- Plays everything I’ve tried so far, though I’ve only thrown a limited amount of content its way since I decided to return it.- Playing over a network share is significantly better than DLNA. It seeks much more quickly, has full subtitle and multiple audio track support, and audio will not be compressed or down-converted.- Has some neat features like changing the color, font, size, and location of subtitles, slow play, A-B repeat, A/V sync (but see cons), and resume play (again, see cons).Cons/Room for improvement:- Bright blue LEDs on the front.- Info popup covers a lot of the screen and should have a time remaining countdown and a clock, but it does have a lot of good info otherwise.- Can’t adjust the length of the seek/jump time (how far it moves ahead or back in the video when pressing the right/left buttons). Also, it would be helpful when jumping forward/backward to see not just what time it’s jumping to, but how much time will be skipped.- Would be nice to see thumbnails of the video at a selected spot when changing the “goto” time, as well as possibly when jumping with the right/left arrows.- Needs ability to play forward and backward frame by frame- Resume play doesn’t persist through a power-cycle. So if you want it to retain your place in videos, you can’t turn it off.- Should be able to use left/right arrows to navigate between folders- Video list needs another view mode with small thumbnails next to the video name. I like seeing thumbnails, but in thumbnail mode you barely see any of the video name.- Video length should be displayed along with the name in the list.- Needs an option to disable acceleration when scrolling through a list of files. If you have a folder with a lot of files and you scroll down to get to what you want, it will accelerate and scroll faster, and you will fly through the list way too fast and pass what you’re looking for. In fact, I often find myself back and the top as it goes so fast it reaches the end and loops back.- Needs option to disable automatically playing the next video in the list when the current video finishes.- The remote needs to be pointed almost directly at the player. It needs to have a wider range or, better yet, RF capability. The remote should also have illuminated buttons.- AV sync only goes in one direction and only up to 500ms, which is not enough. Also, it has to be adjusted in the system settings, which means going into settings, adjusting it, going back to the video, checking to see how much change it made, then going back and forth until you get it right, assuming you can with its very limited capability. This is something that should be able to be adjusted while the video is playing.- Need to be able to select which network shares to show and not show.- Even though I have Favorites as my default screen, when I press the home button, the Premium apps are selected by default. This makes little sense, and personally I would prefer the file manager to be the default selection when pressing the home key.- Frequently lags, sometimes a little, sometimes quite a bit. Once, it completely froze for a couple minutes.- Has forgotten my login info for the shared drive twice in a couple days. This is the main reason I decided to return it, as I’m not going to enter my login and ~20 character password constantly just to get this to work, especially considering it takes forever with the remote and arrowing all over to enter the characters. As mentioned before, this player is extremely similar to the KDLinks HD700, and that player did this very same thing, only it happened after a couple days, whereas this one lasted a few weeks.- Instructions are incomplete. Apparently they couldn’t be bothered to explain all the functions, and many of the ones they do include in the manual aren’t explained well. This is another big reason I decided to return it.- The website is set up poorly. They don’t have a direct downlink link for the updates on the product pages, instead you have to go through the downloads section and find your player in a non-sorted list, and at first I grabbed the wrong firmware update because I looked up and down through the list until I saw the XDS73D, but afterward I realized there was a separate link for the mk2 version. Also, the English update is older than the others, and I could see people grabbing the one for the wrong language because it’s a higher version number, thinking it’s the most up-to-date one, without realizing it.Ultimately, I considered keeping it, just because for videos the PS3 can’t handle (or handle well) it does work. And I probably would have just as another method of playing my videos if not for the repeated forgetting of my login credentials. If you're using it to access videos on a computer that doesn't have a login, then this would work pretty well. Otherwise, you're taking a gamble, as it seems this and the KDLinks players have an inherent software/firmware issue that may cause you lots of grief down the road. Thankfully, it started acting up inside the return window.

Excellent player for your local media library
Excellent player for your local media library... Highly recommended for it's ability to play everything you may have on your USB hard drives or local NAS devices. Don't buy it if you need to play online streaming video from Netflix or similar sources. You'll need to combine it with Roku or Amazon Fire player to enjoy both local files and streaming video from the Internet.Pros:1. Great design, great look, feels like much more expensive gadget.2. Nice remote, very responsive.3. Plays EVERYTHING through both USB and network. Any codec, any bitrate.4. Plays high bitrate files over Wi-Fi connection without any issues (in my tests, up to 20-25Mbps when connected to D-Link DIR-880L router).5. UPNP (DLNA) compatible.6. No overheating issues whatsoever.Cons:1. Interface looks kind of old-fashioned (at least compared to current generation WD TV players).2. After turning on, WLAN needs up to 10-15 seconds to establish connection with router or access point.3. No OTA firmware upgrades - you need to download firmware upgrade file to USB drive and plug it in order to upgrade.4. After firmware upgrades, all your settings are lost.5. After firmware upgrade, WLAN may fail to start. You'll need to power off the player for a few seconds, then power t back on to enable Wi-Fi.6. WLAN may fail to start / operate when USB3.0 stick connected to USB3.0 port.7. Comes with European-style power supply but includes adapter to US standard outlets. The adapter is a total piece of junk, hardly useable at all. I recommend to buy a better adapter here on Amazon or somewhere else. A few bucks will buy you a piece of mind.8. Factory reset will not erase some of your settings.9. HDMI handshake issues after factory reset. If you see blank screen a few minutes after factory reset, power off the player using your remote, wait a minute or two, and power it back on.10. Android is a joke, don't even bother to play with it.11. Built-in apps are useless, no good apps like Netflix or Amazon video.12. You can't save shortcuts to UPNP (DLNA) sources in Favorites.
