April's (Taraji P. Henson) niece, Jennifer, and her two nephews, Byron and Manny, need a place to stay. She doesn't want anything to do with them because, Randy (Brian White), her married boyfriend, doesn't like children, but she lets them move in since they have no place else to go. But just until the one who has been taking care of them is found. Sandino, a good looking Columbian immigrant, is new in town and he also needs a place to live. Even though she's not happy about it, April allows this handyman to rent her basement. April sings in a night club and she likes to sleep all day, but now there are others in her space, and she isn't happy with the new arrangement at all.April is a woman who doesn't care about anyone but herself. She's not a bad person. She's an unhappy person dissatisfied with her life and still burdened by things that happened in her past, so she has a wall up and she is determined not to let anybody in. She doesn't even like it when others tell her that they'll be praying for her. I don't know if she was angry at God or if she didn't think she deserved His love, but I was glad when she realized church was the place to go so she could begin to find peace. And as for the opposite sex, I don't think any man really cared about her until Sandino.Sandino (Adam Rodriguez) is a man with a good heart. Bad things have happened to him in the past, but, unlike April, he isn't holding onto those experiences; at least not in a bad way. He reaches out to others - particularly children - because of what he went through. He is a very likeable character with lots of good attributes.Sixteen year old Jennifer (Hope Olaide Wilson) didn't trust anyone because nobody ever gave her a reason to trust them. She wasn't used to anyone being kind to her unless they wanted something in return and that was sad. She had way too much on her for a girl her age; too many responsibilities and I'm thinking, too many bad memories. She wasn't just an older sister to her brothers, Byron and Manny; she was the one who took care of them. (All of them have been through a lot in their young lives). She was an angry girl who was always on her guard and that was understandable. She was also afraid. I don't feel like I'm gonna make it - it was really heartbreaking to hear this young girl speak those words. I felt so bad for her.I own only a few of Tyler Perry's plays on DVD and I watch his television shows on occasion, but I have seen every one of his movies and own all but one on DVD. There are some movies where I couldn't see the Christian theme; however it is very strong in this film and I was glad about that. The church scene had me saying, Amen! Also, I enjoy the movies with Madea because she makes me laugh. She can be a wild woman but she is also a woman of wisdom (unless she's telling Bible stories :). What Madea said to Jennifer at the kitchen table was something this young girl needed to hear. I really liked that scene.I Can Do Bad All by Myself: I enjoyed the movie and I love to listen to Mary J Blige sing the uplifting song. It was also nice to see Gladys Knight and to hear her sing. And Marvin Winans' songs: You Just Don't Wanna Know /Over it Now/Oh Lord, I Want You to Help Me - so inspirational and healing. I was disappointed when I couldn't find a soundtrack.Good acting, good singing, good messages - One of Tyler Perry's best.

You simply cannot go wrong with Taraji P. Henson, Tyler Perry, or Mary J. Blige. This was an awesome movie with a lot of heart and indecipherable bible verses. :)

I love this movie. A great value for the money. I have watched this movie alot. It’s very funny and has a good story line

One of Tyler Perry's best roles & one of Taraji P. Henson's best performances. Taraji stars April-a nightclub singer who's sleeping with a married man that takes care of all the bills. Well, she has a niece & 2 nephews that get in trouble breaking in Madea's house & must pay off the debt they owe. The kids stay with April's mom but haven't heard from her in a few days. So Madea takes them to their closest relative, April who hates kids with a passion & only cares about herself. That all changes when April gets word from the pastor (Mario Winans) that her mom passed away one day on the bus from a brain aneurysm. Hurt by the recent tragedy & torn between her own selfish ways & doing the right things for the kids, she eventually moves the kids into her house for good & learns how to love & care for other in the process. It's a very heartfelt message as only Tyler Perry could bring to the table & no one could be more believable playing this role than Taraji P. Henson.

I've seen some not so good write ups about this film. But I loved it. Taraji P Henson strong presence as the selfish, but redeemable, lounge singer April is no surprise, as is Brian White, who plays April's married lover, Randy, and is the irredeemable villain of the piece. And her world is interrupted by her niece and nephews, who are brought to her by Madea (the most famous of Tyler Perry's alter egos), when their grandmother, April's own mother goes missing, and by Adam Garcia, from CSI Miami fame, plays Sandino, a Colombian immigrant sent by the pastor (Marvin Winans) to fix April's house in exchange for room and board, sees the vulnerability April tries to hide from the world and falls in love with herI think that the whole over the top thing with Tyler's movies is the thing that's most endearing about them. The whole Madea being involved sometimes seemed out of step with this movie, because she seemed so separate from it, but she's just so funny and good hearted I can forgive her for wanting to involve herself and her brother Joe. And I like the moral and morale of the story. I'm not a Christian but I can still be uplifted by the process of April's realisations and redemption. And I loved the music. Pastor Winans was wicked!Other surprise guests were Gladys Knight and Mary J Blige. They did what they did best and sang, but as actors, they were also very crucial to the plot, mainly as older and younger versions of April's conscience.And why shouldn't everything turn out alright in the end? Isn't that what we'd all like? There's enough misery in the world. Realism wrapped in a little escapism is what Tyler does best (or is that the other way around?). Whatever. Enjoy!!

Henson commits to her performance with such fervour that you nearly believe Henson is her character. Henson’s performance nearly qualifies as a minor miracle- playing a hard-living frivolous adult woman with an excessive drinking problem and a creepy boyfriend. Henson lets her big, expressive brown eyes convey bottomless pain and buried sadness as she travels a soul searching road from darkness to light. As church goers might say ‘from sin to salvation’.

I saw the movie when it was released and wanted to get a personal copy when it became available on DVD. It is the type of film that one can relate to and there is always an underlying message that one can apply in life from Tyler Perry plays and films. Quite inspiring.

Absolutely loved the lead character. she was convincing and also her portrayal as someone who has been really hurt was so convincing. I cried and identified with someof the issues.

I know Tyler Perry has a predictable formula for all his movies but it is very entertaining in a feel good kind of way. I think why he pulls it off again and again is because he has good actors.
