Rust-Oleum 254860 11-Ounce Specialty Spray Color Shift, Galaxy Blue

Did my engine block and valve covers for my jet boat and they came out great! Must spray over a black base coat and with many thin coats. When I used it like 4 years ago it was $30 a can and it took 3 cans to look really good. Now it's down to $20 a can.

I originally tried using a Krylon metallic to paint a scooter and it was awful. So bad, I stripped it off and reprimed in black in order to prepare for the colorshift. I gave the scooter three coats of black primer followed by a wetsanding with 3000 grit and a wipedown. I hung the scooter parts and shot them when it was about 50 degrees out and overcast. I was worried that it would be too cool to paint, but I had no issues. I was very pleased at how easy to use this paint was. The spray tip did a good job atomizing and providing light and even coverage. The paint went on and adhered well with no drama. I wasn't exactly precise with my technique, but I never got a single drip or run. Coverage was excellent and got good results even with the first coat alone. After the 2nd and 3rd, the depth and color shift effect was fantastic.Yes, this stuff is expensive, but this is one of those cases where you absolutely get what you pay for. I will totally use this stuff again. It totally transformed the scooter from being very plain to freaking awesome.

First of all, expensive? Yes. BUT really worth the price. I have refinished a few guitars but wanted something a little different. The guitar I was working on has rounded edges which I first painted with black lacquer spreay paint giving it a black burst effect. I then used this to paint over the black. The finished guitar is WOW. I am impressed. There are companies that will paint your guitar with chromeleon paint for as little as $200 (yikes!), but I got the same effect for $25! Nice shades of purple and bright blue with an occasional flash of gold. Really cool on the curved edges when the lights hit it.Be sure to spary it over black, primer or paint, it doesn't matter, but make sure it is compatible with lacquer as this is a lacquer based spray and may craze or crack if incompatible with the base coat (most primers are safe or a black automotive lacquer paint). This paint is a little harder to work with because it really jets out of the can. You have to be quick and always keep your hand in motion when spraying. It is NOT the same as all other cans of paint. Probably has to have the extra pressure in the can due to the fact that you are spraying particles, not just liquid. Just keep you hand moving to avoid runs. Once the colorshift paint had dried, I then shot several layers of clear lacquer over top to really bring out the effect.I still have half a can left and am looking for more things I can shoot with it! My daughter's bike helmet is looking verrrrrry intriguing. I really like this stuff!! Good luck with it. It's really a great product.

Rust-Oleum came through with this one.Remember about 10 years ago when those multi-colored cars were all the rage? Well you can now bring that to just about anything you own.Color-shifting flashlight, check. Color-shifting cellphone, check. Computer case, check. Interior, exterior, plastics, metal... check check and check. Now you too can be like the cool kids of last decade. Don't think this combo is a little out-dated' well it is. However, this paint product definitely delivers.Simply spray over any black surface and voila. Be warned though.This product requires a black base to work. I tried it over a medium gray and it did not turn out. I recommend it be applied over a black primer. I had excellent success painting over Rust-Oleum's black primer. Be sure to apply it in several light coats over about 10 minutes. The more coats the better the look. This product does not work well on a really rough surface such as plywood. Sanded wood, plastic, metal, and other smooth surfaces are recommended. Items with unique shapes and curves will look really well with this paint. I did try applying over some Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch brand paint, and it caused the base coat to peel and crinkle. This particular piece had been cured over a month, so I believe the Color Shift is not compatible with Painter's Touch; and I would recommend it only be applied over a primer.I painted some spoiler stands with it and they turned out really well [...]. Of course being on a car, I will not be keeping them for long; only until I have the remainder of the body work complete, then a professional paint job.

I used this on the interior of my jeep and it looks pretty sweet! The only downfall is that it did not dry down as smooth as I hoped. I applied two coats (which I regret, it looked better with one) and it feels a little rough. Still looks awesome though! If doing again, I would try using a clear coat to eliminate the rough texture. (The two pictures of the pieces before they were applied only have one coat and give it a cool speckled look on top of the gloss black which I definitely prefer.)

This paint rocks (and it will continue to do so, since it's going on an electric guitar)! I shot a test patch over a black base coat, as recommended... three very light coats of color-shift and clear coat and it works as advertised. Viewed straight on, it's a really deep metallic blue, but as your viewing angle changes, it appears purple, and there are some very faint green and red tones. I hope the green and red become more pronounced with more coats and a wider surface area. I can hardly wait to give this a real application!
