Solid, workhorse optical drive
LG optical drives have, for years, been workhorses--dependable, steady Eddies that rarely produce coasters. For five years now I've had an LG combo Blu-Ray drive, and I've burned well over a thousand CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs on it, and can't remember the last time it failed to burn a disc successfully. I also have a Plextor drive, which I *thought* was the benchmark to which other drives were compared. I've had so many issues with the Plextor drive tray getting stuck that I gave up on it a few months ago and replaced it with this LG multi-drive, and so far the LG drive has lived up to my expectations. It reads and records every format of disc that I have except Blu-Ray, of course, and seems to plow right through problem discs as well--ones with scratches or smudges. It can't do miracles, of course, but the laser pickup seems to be very forgiving of scratches and imperfections on the disc surface. The unit is quiet while in operation, though some wind noise is unavoidable when recording at speeds over 24x (a disc spinning at 48x is gonna make noise no matter which drive is turning it).Setup is standard for any 5.25" SATA device. There are four screws to mount, and SATA data and power jacks in back. All operating systems today should automatically detect and install the driver, and even an SATA-1 interface and cable are sufficient, so you can install this in practically any desktop with an SATA jack. Please note that the OEM version does not come with an SATA cable or Molex to SATA power adapter, so if you're adding a second drive you'll need the SATA data cable, and if your power supply doesn't have SATA power plugs you'll also want to grab one of those adapters. There's not much else to say about this. It's a great drive, especially for the price, and if it lives up to the reputation of previous LG drives, I'll still be using this thing five years from now.

As adversticed and works good for ripping audio CDs and burning DVDs
There are a few 1-star reviews for this product that are incorrect. The most common one is no box, manual, screws, cables, software, etc. This is a bulk/OEM drive. So you don't get anything with it. It's just a drive in a generic Amazon box. Just wanted to get that out of the way.I've been using this drive to rip audio CDs mainly. I use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) to do secure rips. Audio CDs don't have error checking/correction so you need to use a secure ripping software like Exact Audio Copy (EAC). This drive supports "Accurate Stream" and "C2 Error Reporting" features that EAC uses.I've burned a few DVDs and they have all been good. Ideally you want to burn at the SLOWEST speed to get a good burn. This goes for any brand of burner, not just this LG. Same goes for the blank discs that you buy. Cheap no-name blank media are not good quality and may have burn issues or your burned discs won't be readable a few years later. I learned that the hard way. Blank media by Verbatim and Sony are the best, but read the reviews to see who is making the current batches.

Don't Let the Price Fool You, These Are the Best You Can Get
This LG is about the least expensive DVD burner you can get. But don't let the price fool you. I have owned more expensive burners over the years, and they're no better. LG is a global leader in electronics manufacturing. HP, Dell, and most of the other big name manufacturers do not "make" their own components. They don't even assemble their own systems. You're paying for a name and logo. Who knows who they've contracted with for the parts. About the only thing you can count on is it's the lowest bidder from China. In this case, LG IS the manufacturer. This is a quality burner that will do everything any other burner can do, except burn a label. It's just as fast, will last just as long... scratch that... will last longer. Remember, this is not a lowest Chinese bidder model. You won't find a better burner.

LG Quality didn’t disappoint.
LG Quality! I’ve used LG products for many years, in fact, I have a LG Tv that I’ve had since 1990 and it still works fantastically! I’m not disappointed by the quality and ease of operation of this burner either. It fit beautifully inside my HP Tower without any problem. It booted up without a problem and my Windows had no problem finding and integrating it in the system. I’ve already burned a few CD’s with it and it shortened the burn time by about 15 seconds. That might not sound like much, but when you’re burning many CD’s at a time those seconds add up.

LG GH24NSC0B - Works internally with my Mac Pro 2009-2010
No drivers needed. However, in order for this drive's tray to line up with and fit through the optical drive tray door on the Mac Pro's case, the bezel on the front of the drive's disc tray must be removed, which is easily done...The bezel is held to the tray by 3 clips. Simply eject the tray, hold the tray steady with one hand, and with the other, pull the lower edge of one end of the bezel away from the tray while lifting up. That will release at least one of the 3 clips. If the others continue to hold the bezel, just pull out and lift up on the bezel's center and other end.The drive is noticeably faster and no noisier tan the original, factory Hitachi/LG optical drive, and for those of us who archive data to optical disc, the M-Disc compatibility is a big plus.Overall, an excellent value. Would have given it 5 stars except for one, small annoyance—every 10 minutes or so the drive "wakes up" with a very soft "chuck... chuck" sound. This is with no disc in the drive and no applications spinning up discs in order to open or save a file. It's by no means a deal-breaker, just distracting.
