A tile-laying game for ages 10 and up
Palmyra is a fairly short tile-laying game. All players' pieces start in "the city". Players have a "legion" piece, which allows them to take land tiles, and a "censor" piece, which gives them money. The larger tiles are octagonal and the smaller ones are square. This allows the large ones to touch at the corners as well as on the sides. The players' pieces move one step at a time, although multiple moves in one turn are possible. Matching the adjacent tiles gets the player more land tiles or more money, depending on which piece is moved. As near as I can tell, the trick is to get enough tiles accumulated by matching that you are able to switch over to taking mostly money. There is also a "tribute" feature which can be used to turn land tiles into paying assets. [Note rules clarification: The city is considered one large tile. Also, no piece in the city is considered "adjacent" for the purposes of scoring.]The mechanisms here are well thought-out, and the game play is interesting to hold adult interest but simple enough for a child of 10.
