Basic story that gets the job done
We have the Year of the Monkey book for my 1st son, so when my year of the dog boy came along we got him this. I was not as impressed with the storyline/ flow and it didn’t capture my book loving boys as much. Otherwise, it did help portray the general personality of a dog.

Great book
These are great books with a cute story featuring a Chinese Zodiac. My 3rd grade students love when I read them these books.

The problem is the story is not good. The language is stilted and does not flow
I was looking for a book to use with library classes on Chinese New Year and this looked really cute. The illustrations are appealing and it is written in both English and Chinese. The problem is the story is not good. The language is stilted and does not flow. It is not interesting or engaging.

Big Fan of this Book and "The Year of..." Series of Books
It's so unusual to find a book that exposes English-speaking young audiences to Chinese subjects and storytelling so I'm a big fan of this series and this book in particular! It was great to see all the kids at my daughter's elementary school check out these books from the school library. There should be more cross-cultural offerings like this, so my hat off to the publisher, Immedium.

Whimsical story and captivating illustrations... Wishing for...
The Year of the Dog is a wonderfully whimsical story that my young daughters like to read to ME, since I was born in the Year of the Dog. The illustrations are simply captivating. "See what you look like here, Mommy." We loved reading the traits of those born in the Year of the Dog ("See Mommy, here it says you are loyal AND stubborn.") We also like the fact it has a listing of the years that qualify. We are wishing that the ENTIRE series of books were available now to purchase, instead of having to wait each year for a new one. Only the Dog, Pig, Rat, and Ox are available now, so we will be waiting 8 more years to get the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, and Rooster. My oldest will be 18 then. Sigh... Nevertheless, we want you to know we love this book -- it's one of our favorites.

Outstanding book
The Year of the Dog: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac is a great book! Oliver Chin's tale of a brave little dog looking for a chance to prove himself is clever and inspiring. My kids, aged 7, 9 and 11 all enjoy the book and read it all the time. Miah Alcorn's illustrations are colorful, lively and full of expression. Yet another great book in the Chinese Zodiac series. I just ordered Year of the Pig and the new Year of the Rat. I highly recommend this book!
